Pranayama is commonly understood as regulation of breath. It is popularly seen as a way of increasing oxygen in the bloodstream through breathing. But Breath is not Prana, it is a manifestation of Prana.
As Swami Vivekananda said "Pranayama does not really mean control of breath, but the control of universal energy, Prana, that moves the whole universe." Pranayam begins by regulation of breath. It is popularly seen as a way of increasing oxygen in the bloodstream. But this concept involves some myths as well.
