About the Retreat - Experiencing Shiva

In the sylvan surroundings of the Hindu University of America campus at Pine Lake Retreat in Orlando, we welcome all for a three-day retreat on "Experiencing Śiva." That weekend, nature heralds the arrival of Vasanta Ṛtu, the Vedic spring season—a time of renewal and rejoicing. Usher in Ugādi, the Hindu New Year, with Gaṇapati Pūjā, Pañcāṅga-śravaṇa, Rudrābhiṣeka, Homa, Vedic chants, musical presentations on Śiva, Holi celebrations, and more.

Join us in this joyful, spiritual celebration spanning the laukika (worldly), ādhibhautika (physical), ādhidaivika (divine), and ādhyātmika (spiritual) aspects of Śiva and Hinduism.

Dates: Thursday, March 27, 2025 – Sunday, March 30, 2025

Purpose of Retreat

The Śvetāśvataropaniṣad declares:

एको हि रुद्रो न द्वितीयाय तस्थुः (Śv. U. 3.3)
"Eko hi Rudro na dvitīyāya tasthuḥ"
– There is only ONE Rudra; no second exists.

ईशं तं ज्ञात्वा अमृताः भवन्ति (Śv. U. 3.7)
"Īśam taṁ jñātvā amṛtāḥ bhavanti"
– By knowing the Lord, one attains immortality.

This retreat is carefully designed to understand and implement the sādhana required to achieve this lofty goal of amṛtatva (immortality).

As the Bhagavad Gītā (11.54) states, spiritual success is:

"ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुं च परन्तप"
"Jñātuṁ draṣṭuṁ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṁ ca parantapa"
– To know, to see, to enter, and to become one with the One.

To help us experience Mahādeva (the Great God), we will explore the Vedas, Upaniṣads, stotras, Purāṇas, Itihāsas, Mūrtilakṣaṇam (iconography), Saṅgītam (music), Nāṭyam (dance), Loka-kathā (folklore), Tīrtha (sacred sites), and their Sthala Purāṇas (regional sacred lore). Our esteemed faculty and performing artists will guide us in this exploration.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn Vedic mantras and musical compositions.
  • Witness a dance performance on Bhagavān Śiva.
  • Participate in the sacred Vedic rituals of Rudrābhiṣeka and Homa, with the chance to both learn and perform them.
